Our Centre
Surgical Therapy of Obesity and Related Diseases
In our Interdisciplinary Centre for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery at the University of Freiburg we deal with all aspects of obesity and its related diseases. Our centre is composed of specialists in sports medicine, nutritionists, psychologists, specialists in internal medicine, gynaecologists, diabetologists, endocrinologists, radiologists, aesthetic surgeons, endoscopists and our special section for Videosurgery including Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery. Our special therapy for obesity and related disorders is always based on current German clinical standards. Our team is taking part in several clinical trials in cooperation with the Surgical Metabolic and Anastomosis Research Team (S.M.A.R.T.) to discover new options and therapeutic procedures for each individual patient.
In our Department, we perform all different bariatric procedures with minimally-invasive techniques. This includes endoscopic insertion of a gastric balloon, laparoscopic gastric banding, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch or Scopinaro and all kinds of revisionary (additive) operations, which may be necessary during the follow-up period. New methods like banded gastric bypass or banded sleeve gastrectomy were in part introduced by our Bariatric and Metabolic centre.
Patients admitted to our Department of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery will be accommodated in commodious rooms, which are adapted to the special needs arising from obesity. For the expensive and complex operations, we use the highest international levels of equipment for minimally-invasive surgery including an operating room with the newest HDTV technique. All bariatric patients who undergo an individual procedure are observed in our intensive care unit directly after the operation. Every day, medical attendance is ensured by our special Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Team. All patients are included in standardized follow-up care, which includes clinical examination, additional dietary consultation, laboratory testing, sonography, endoscopy and special radiological methods (3D computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging for the stomach), which were developed and are only provided in our Department for Minimally-invasive Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery.
The aim of our Interdisciplinary Centre for the Treatment of Obesity is to achieve a high level of long-term success and to ameliorate the obese patient’s quality of life by using individual therapy pathways, by applying state-of-the-art techniques and always by considering the individual as a whole and respecting his/her wishes.
