What is Metabolic surgery?
It is well known that obesity is associated with the major components of the metabolic syndrome, such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and Type 2 Diabetes mellitus. The above are also considered to be cardiovascular risk factors that appear to directly promote the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Myocardiac and cerebral infarction are the unhappy endpoints of this disease. Besides the problems mentioned above, dyslipidemia will lead to steatohepatitis, a chronic liver disease that can transform to liver cirrhosis.
Metabolic surgery provides great opportunities for this group of patients, reaching full remission of Type 2 Diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and Insulin resistance. Also, steatohepatits will be ameliorated and cirrhosis can be prevented.
Regarding Type 2 Diabetes, Insulin therapy will not be necessary after our operation in most cases, regardless of the amount of Insulin needed before. To reduce 300 IE Insulin to zero is not asked too much. The amelioration of dyslipidemia will occur within 1 year after operation parallel to weight loss and shows a sustained effect.
Concerning the type of procedure, we offer custom made surgery from Sleeve gastrectomy over Gastric bypass to BPD and Duodenal switch.
